Slow Cooker Thanksgiving Dressing
When i first read through this recipe I was slightly hesitant, only BECAUSE I had never heard of cooking dressing in a slow cooker. I had time this weekend so i figured what better time to at least test it out. If it didn’t work I could scrape it out into a pan and cook in the oven. I can very happily report that it turned out great and was super easy! The hardest part is figuring out when to start the slow cooker. Even if you notice the dressing is done, turning the slow cooker down to warm for a few hours wouldn’t hurt anything.
SLOW COOKER THANKSGIVING DRESSING
1 c. Butter
2 c. onion chopped
2 c. celery chopped
12-13 c. dry bread cubes
1 teaspoon poultry seasoning
1 ½ teaspoon salt
1 ½ teaspoon sage
1 teaspoon thyme
½ teaspoon pepper
3 ½ -4 ½ c. chicken broth
2 Well beaten eggs
Melt butter in skillet; sauté onions and celery together. Pour over bread cubes in a very large bowl. Add all seasonings and toss together well. Pour in enough broth to moisten thoroughly, add beaten eggs; mix together well. Put in crockpot on high for 45 minutes; then reduce to low for 4 to 6 hours.
A few changes I made when testing this recipe
Decreased the amount of celery, and subbed celery salt.
Didn’t have any poultry seasoning so added more thyme and sage. Also added a dash of nutmeg and about 1 teaspoon of dried oregano.
For reference my crockpot is approximately 5 quarts. This is my best guess based on my research of looking through ebay listings at similar slow cookers to mine. This recipe and amount of dressing fit perfectly in my slow cooker. Wasn’t full to the very top, had about 2 inches of room still in the pot. Just for anyone who is looking to double the recipe, I think it could easily be done in a 7-8 quart slow cooker. Also my crockpot is a circle so the very middle is what took the longest to finish cooking. And oval would have more surface area and may cook faster.
